From Ella Kennen,Your Guide to Paintball.
Safety

Every time you play paintball, you will probably pick up a tactic or two. But here are some important ground rules regarding safety and good sportsmanship to get you started. Your fellow paintball players will expect you to know and abide by these quick dos and donts.

Dos
ALWAYS wear your paintball mask when you are on a field, regardless of whether or not there is a game going on. Accidents happen, and a paintball mask could save you from losing an eye.

Listen to the ref and follow the rules of the paintball field. Rules exist for players safety. When everyone follows them, you can concentrate on the fun stuff playing.

Put in your barrel plug, or put on your barrel sock, when your marker is not in play. These simple safety devices can protect someone from serious injury if a paintball gun accidentally goes off. Also a barrel plug/sock lets other players know you are out of play so you dont get unnecessarily shot up.

Dress appropriately. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts provide protection against the impact of paintballs. The right clothes let you run, slide, crouch and do other maneuvers more safely, as well.

Dont
Shoot people if they are too close. Paintballs can come blazing out of marker at 300 feet per second! Its important to give them time to slow down. Commercial paintball fields normally have rules about how far apart you have to be to shoot someone. If you arent sure what the rules are, play it safe: dont shoot at anyone closer than 15 feet from you.

Sportsmamship
Youve read about safety, now find out about paintball etiquette (yes, there is such a thing!)
Dos
Have a positive attitude. Things arent always going to go your way during a paintball game. But you can always learn something from every game. Remember, youll have another chance to play soon. A positive attitude will make you a popular teammate among fellow paintball players.

Work as a team. Coordinated assaults work much better than solo efforts. You can provide cover for each other as each paintball player takes turns moving ahead, you can communicate information and objectives, and you can give each player a clear mission (e.g., one or two guard the flag station, two try to flank left, etc.)

Donts
Cheat. People who wipe paint off instead of admitting they have been eliminated make the game unfair for everyone. A wiper will get caught sooner or later and risk getting kicked off the paintball field. Nobody wants to play with a cheater.

Give up. Even if you run out of paint or air, you can still be useful to your teammates. Try pretending you can still shoot; this will keep your opponents at bay for a while. If that doesnt work, you can always relay information about the opposition to your teammates, sacrifice yourself as a distraction while someone else tries to accomplish a goal, etc.
